daughter of smoke and bone / laini taylor
"once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love.
it did not end well."
This is one of the best books I have ever read! Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a story about a blue-haired girl, Karou, who was raised by "monsters" in a shop in Prague. She doesn't know anything about her past, but she soon discovers it after running errands by the devil who raised her, Brimstone, and meeting dangerous people whom she comes across throughout her journey. Karou doesn't exactly know who she is either, but in the end she finds out. Even about the enemies she is to be against with.
Also, you'll come to love our lovely protagonist, Karou, for her great sense of humor and sarcasm. She cracked me up in the book! But yet again, everything about her past and memories tore me apart. I never knew.
I'm going to keep this review short for now because I'm literally dazed over everything. But if you haven't read this, I suggest you do!
Love love love this book so much! I want to thank those 10+ bloggers who convinced me to read this book. I'm definitely going to buy Days of Blood and Starlight some time next week! For now, I'm going to leave and sulk and cry over how this heavenly book reached my favorites list.
This definitely reached my top 3 for sure!
I've been meaning to read this one for such a long time but I was a little nervous as I've heard the writing is a bit of an acquired taste. But I'm so glad you enjoyed it and hopefully I'll love it as much as you did when I finally get around to reading it! :) Great review!

It's a good book, Emily!! You should read it! Well yeah the writing takes time to get used to, but if you love formal-ish and straightforward writing with a bit of humor, you'll definitely love this book!! I hope you get to read it soon. You'll love it, no joke :D
DeleteI completely agree Jillian! This was so fantastic, and I'm so glad you adored it as well! The writing here was absolutely exquisite and the romance was so swoon-worthy! But that ending though! *cries with you* So, so sad. :'(
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Jillian, and, as always, BRILLIANT review! <3 Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to see what you think of the rest of the series! :)

Let's cry over the ending together hahaha! :'D *cries sadly* No, but the ending really tore me because I really wasn't expecting anything about Karou when I first started (although, it was sort of predictable in the middle).
DeleteI'll be continuing the series! Days of Blood and Starlight will be the next book I'll buy if I visit the bookstore :D
This book has been on my TBR for a scary long time. I'm hoping to read it before the year is up. Great review!

Don't worry, I feel the same way for Anna and the French Kiss (it's been in my TBR for months, and has been featured in my Top Ten Tuesdays around 5 times now). READ IT :D :D
DeleteI am so fangirl over this book as well. It was amazing and i totally need to read it again. I feel like I talk about this book at least once a week. I want to eat at Poison Kitchen and I want Zuzana to be my best friend!
ReplyDeleteMissie @ A Flurry of Ponderings
I know, I'm already joining the Daughter of Smoke & Bone bandwagon now!! *fangirls* I love Zuzana too! And Poison Kitchen would be cool to visit even if it sounds a little creepy in the book. Haha :)

Lovely blog you have here, Jillian! And it's awesome that you're a Filipina as well! We are fabulous! <3
START READING IT NOW. It won't disappoint, I promise :D It takes some time to understand the story and go along with it, but I promise you that it'll be LIFE-CHANGING.

I'm so glad you loved this as much as I did! I still have to read the rest of the series too
ReplyDeleteYAY! :D I'm planning to read the rest of the series so I hope you do too so we can cry over it :))
DeleteI'm so glad when I see a book that lives up to the readers expectations, and this series always comes really highly recommended. It's been a while since I read this one (haven't read the rest of the series as yet), but it blew me away. It was incredibly unique and I think really set the bar higher for all YA fantasy titles. Karou is such a kick behind character, I absolutely adored her wit and sarcasm too. Fantastic review <3
ReplyDeleteI'm so late in reading this book hahaha! I love Karou and her blue hair - she's amazing :D And yes she's so funny and sarcastic that it makes the overall novel very hilarious! I love this book so much. I can't believe I haven't started with it yet earlier!!
DeleteThis is one of my favourite books from one of my favourite trilogies (I just read the last two books this year). My reaction to this first book was different than any I'd had in a while. I felt like the author had ripped out my heart and stomped on it. Those twists! That ending! And Laini Taylor's writing is so beautiful. I'd highly recommend reading the rest of the series soon; I wish I hadn't waited so long between the first and second books!
ReplyDeleteYES THOSE ENDINGS OMG!! THEY'RE AMAZING! *cries with you* I'm so glad you feel that way over the book too! And yes I will be continuing the rest of the series (I plan to buy the 2nd book some time this weekend). Thanks for recommending!! I'm so excited :D haha
DeleteTHE ANSWER IS YES. Cry and weep and dance because this is one glorious book <3 But to be honest, Days of Blood and Starlight is 10x better. SO PREPARE YOURSELF FOR FEELS AND MORE CRYING
ReplyDeleteYOU ARE MAKING ME MORE EXCITED HAHA :D Thanks for letting me know about that! I plan to buy Days of Blood & Starlight probably this weekend so I hope I get to join all those fangirling! HUHU THE FEELS :"< They really affect me!!
DeleteI AM SO GLAD YOU LIKE THIS BOOK! I DO TOO! *throws tears of pain and happiness of cake in the air* IT WAS INCREDIBLE! I put off reading it for so long because it was huge and kind of scary because everyone loved it and I was worried I'd be a black sheep. But nope. I loved it. And the length was perfect. Are you reading book #2?!! I just finished it and loved it and noooow I want book #3! SO EXCITED FOR THE FINALE! XD
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by @ Notebook Sisters!
THIS BOOK IS AMAZING! I know, I also put off reading it because I had so many other books to read and I thought this book wouldn't meet my expectations. But surprisingly, IT DID! :D I'm buying the second book later today, I'm so excited!!! :D I hope you buy the third book, I want to know what you think about it!! :)
